Start with the Condenser and the Two Systems
The first thing to know is that many Sub-Zero built-ins use two independent sealed systems, one for the refrigerator and one for the freezer. That is why a warm fresh-food section with a cold freezer is common and does not mean the compressor is dead; it points to a fault on the fridge circuit, such as the evaporator fan, the air damper, or a defrost problem on that side.
The single most common cause of a Sub-Zero running warm overall is a condenser coil packed with dust and pet hair. When the coil cannot shed heat, the unit runs constantly and still drifts warm. Cleaning the coil behind the upper grille is the first step and often the whole fix.
When It Is More Than a Dirty Coil
If the coil is clean and the unit is still warm, the usual suspects are the condenser fan, the evaporator fan, a defrost heater or thermostat that has left the coil iced over, or a thermistor reading temperature incorrectly. Each of these is a component-level repair on a sound unit. A sealed-system fault, where the refrigerant circuit itself has failed, is possible but far less common and is diagnosed by its own distinct signs.
Because the two systems are independent, we diagnose which circuit is affected and test the fans, defrost components, and sensors on that side before concluding anything about the sealed system.

Move Food If It Has Been Warm for Hours
If the fresh-food section has been above 40 degrees for several hours, move perishables and medication to a cooler and keep the doors closed while the fault is diagnosed.
