Start with What the Unit Is Telling You
Before opening anything, note the pattern. Is the whole box warm, or just the fresh-food side? Is the compressor running constantly, cycling normally, or silent? Is there frost on the back wall or none at all? Those answers usually narrow the cause to one of a few systems: airflow, defrost, the sealed refrigeration circuit, or the controls. A warm fridge with a cold freezer almost always points to airflow or defrost on the fresh-food side, while both compartments warm points to the condenser, condenser fan, or sealed system.

- Evaporator or condenser fan motor that has stalled
- Defrost heater or thermostat failure letting the coil ice over
