Follow the Water, Then the Freeze
An ice maker has to fill with the right amount of water, freeze it fully, and then harvest it into the bin. When it stops, the fault is almost always in one of those three stages. No water reaching the mold points to the supply, the inlet valve, or a frozen fill tube. Water arriving but not freezing points to freezer temperature or the sealed system. Ice forming but not releasing points to the harvest mechanism, the module, or the bin sensor. Knowing which stage fails is most of the diagnosis.
Most Common Causes
- Frozen or clogged fill tube blocking water into the mold
- Weak or failed water inlet valve delivering too little water
- Ice maker module or motor that has burned out
- Freezer or ice compartment running too warm to harvest
- Bin level arm or optical sensor stuck in the full position
- Scale buildup on standalone gourmet and nugget machines
- Drain or pump fault on standalone units causing a shutdown

On Sub-Zero built-ins the fill tube and inlet valve are the usual suspects, and the ice maker shares the freezer's temperature, so a warm compartment stops it too. Scotsman standalone machines fail more often from scale, water sensors, and drain pumps, and respond well to a proper cleaning cycle. Viking and Thermador refrigerator ice makers commonly need a valve or module. True Residential and KitchenAid under-counter units often trace to the fill system or a bin sensor. On Monogram models, a sensor fault can sometimes be read at the display.

Do Not Force Fused Ice
If ice has fused into a block, do not chip at it with metal tools, which can puncture the fill cup or mold heater. Turn the ice maker off, let the block thaw, and book service to find why it clumped in the first place.
