Why Water Stands
Standing water at the end of a cycle means the drain pump could not clear the tub. On KitchenAid and its Whirlpool-family relatives, the drain path includes a filter and sump, a check valve that stops water flowing back, the drain pump, the drain hose, and the sink or disposer connection. A blockage anywhere along that path leaves water behind.
Most of these faults are mechanical, so many are straightforward to clear once you know where to look.
Working the Drain Path
Clean the filter and sump first, clearing food and glass debris, since a clogged filter is the most common cause. Check that the drain hose is not kinked and that the disposer connection is clear, especially if a disposer was recently installed and its knockout plug was left in, which fully blocks the dishwasher drain. If the path is clear and water still stands, the check valve may be stuck or the drain pump jammed or failing.
Clearing the filter and connections resolves many cases; a persistent problem after those checks points to the pump or check valve and should be diagnosed.

Check the Disposer Plug on New Installs
